Our Story & Our History

The Slovene Association Sydney, or Slovensko Društvo Sydney, was established in 1957 by a group of post-war Slovenian migrants determined to preserve their language, culture, and community spirit in their new Australian home. Spearheaded by community leaders such as Father Bernard Ambrožič and Milivoj Lajović, the association began its life in a modest house in Woollahra, generously provided by the Franciscan Order. Despite limited resources, the group created a vibrant social and cultural space for all Slovenians, descendants and friends to celebrate their shared heritage as well as their new homes in Australia.

As the community grew, so too did its ambitions. Through years of volunteer effort, fundraising, and community support, the association purchased land in Horsley Park in the late 1960s, eventually relocating to its current purpose-built centre in Wetherill Park in the mid-1980s. This move marked a new chapter — one that allowed for large cultural festivals, Sunday gatherings featuring traditional Slovenian cuisine, and the continuation of language and youth programs. Today, the Slovene Association Sydney remains a cornerstone of Slovenian-Australian identity, bridging generations and welcoming all who wish to connect with Slovenia’s rich cultural heritage.
